Competition entry for ENEL
Technical equipment that enriches the public space in an aesthetic and user-oriented way. The ENEL distribution cabinet is characterized by its functional, maintenance-friendly and sustainable structure for public spaces. We have optimized its elements and separated the materials to create longevity and lasting quality. The new design makes it identifiable and sets it apart from the otherwise anonymous objects in public spaces.
Construction and aesthetics
The design is based on our newly developed structure with a clear separation of the elements: a large lid made of polygonal surfaces over a recessed sheet metal base. Simplicity and clarity are reflected in the geometric surface, whose folded edges increase the stability of the housing and reduce the amount of material used.
The base is folded from a piece of sheet steel into which the mounts for the technology, hinges and locking elements are integrated. The lever hinges allow the cover to be swung upwards, which when open becomes a protective roof for regular maintenance work.
In contrast to previous products, this new design creates a contemporary and independent appearance whose aesthetics and function counteract vandalism. We translated the company’s new corporate identity three-dimensionally into the product design, making ENEL recognizable in public spaces.
Separation of the components
The new ENEL distribution cabinet essentially consists of two housing elements that accommodate the technical components.
The lid is thermoformed or injection-moulded from colored plastic, depending on the edition and use. The material can vary from conventionally recycled to ecological bio-plastics.
The base and substructure form a single unit to accommodate cables, contacts and guides.
The separability of the elements enables pure recycling.
innovative construction
Due to the upward swinging cover and the flat design of the side walls, the enel street cabinet is very spacesaving and can be placed in a wide variety of locations.
The overlapping of the lid with the metal cabinet, which is bevelled at the top, protects against dirt, weathering and unauthorised tampering and at the same time allows the interior to be ventilated.
The structure and function of the ENEL distribution cabinet lead to an improvement and increase in safety during service work.

branding and integration of additional benefits
The ENEL distribution cabinet enables individual branding and offers optional location-specific added value for residents and passers-by.
Its individual production allows the integration of additional modules such as cell phone charging stations, antennas for public Wi-Fi, analog or digital displays for local information or advertising.
This street cabinet creates a completely new context of use and makes a recognizable, three-dimensional statement in the public space.
